It&#8217;s <em>the bee&#8217;s knees (das Gr\u00f6\u00dfte \/ Beste)<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This idiom changed from its original meaning (which was &#8222;small&#8220; &#8211; quite logical) to its current meaning in the 1920s. It was fashionable in the US at the time to create nonsense slang. There was a whole collection of similar phrases, all of which meant &#8222;something excellent&#8220;: <em>tiger\u2019s spots<\/em>, <em>bullfrog\u2019s beard<\/em>, <em>elephant\u2019s instep<\/em>, <em>caterpillar\u2019s kimono<\/em>, <em>turtle\u2019s neck<\/em>, <em>duck\u2019s quack<\/em>, <em>duck\u2019s nuts<\/em>, <em>monkey\u2019s eyebrows<\/em>, <em>gnat\u2019s elbows<\/em>, <em>oyster\u2019s earrings<\/em> &#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>The bee&#8217;s knees<\/em> was similar in structure to these phrases, and so took on this new meaning.
