In one attempt to cut costs, we outsourced our IT department to an overseas service provider. But we have had to spend so much\u00a0time explaining\u00a0every little detail and dealing with language problems. In the end, it costs us as much\u00a0as we saved by moving the IT staff off our payroll. It&#8217;s <em>swings and roundabouts (gehupft wie gesprungen)<\/em>, really.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-4439 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/interestingliterature.files.wordpress.com\/2015\/09\/swings-and-roundabouts.jpg?w=300&amp;h=200\" alt=\"Swings and roundabouts\" width=\"141\" height=\"94\" \/>This common British idiom comes from the longer phrase: &#8222;What you lose on the swings you gain on the roundabouts&#8220; and is\u00a0based on\u00a0a poem by Irish writer Patrick Reginald Chalmers. It conjures the image of two\u00a0fairground rides \u2013 the roundabout (similar to a carousel) and the swing.\u00a0Both\u00a0move\u00a0without any actual change in location, they return to where they\u00a0started.
