The most plausible explanation for the origin of this idiom comes from the McKay family – makers of fine Scottish whisky from 1856 onwards. There are many examples of the phrase „the real McKay“ in use in Scotland beginning in the second half of the 19th century. Somewhere in its travels across the Atlantic to America, the phrase changed to the form we know today: „the real McCoy“
